The Conversation

Written by: Gregory D Goyins

God, dressed as a homeless man, and the Devil in the personage of a sharp dressed businesswoman, sit on a park bench discussing their plans for the planet Earth for the next 1000 years.

It’s a bright, sunny day. The sky is a beautiful, summer blue. Kids play innocently while moms sit and watch the mayhem, talking amongst themselves.

On a park bench, not to far away, God dressed as a homeless man, surveys the action also. He is taking a break from panhandling. He straightens the assorted trash in his shopping cart. In the middle of God’s busywork, The Devil, in the personage of a sharp dressed businesswoman, walks the footpath leading up to the bench. She carries an expensive looking briefcase in one hand and has her jacket slung her shoulder strolling without a care or concern in the world.

They greet each other, sit and start to talk.
And so begins: The Conversation.

The premise is simple: The Devil must report to God every year to tell him what her plans for Earth are. The two haven’t been on such good terms. In fact, a thousand years has passed since their last meeting. This time, God, feeling ignored by her is in need of an attitude adjustment. He just can’t seem to let some things go. The Devil, even though she is enjoying the fruits of her labor, is never satisfied. She still has axes of her own to grind.

And neither side, as always, is willing to give an inch.

The Conversation is a philosophical comedy that addresses the glaring misconceptions in many religious, spiritual and societal beliefs. It covers everything from Noah’s Ark to the Iraq War. No stone is left unturned as they speed through the history of world in the last 2000 years in a way that only the two masters of circumlocution could. The quips, taunts and wit fly fast and furious in this modern day farce culminating in a cathartic, yet unpredictable conclusion.
